Really interesting. I have no studies on psychology so I'm not aware of this being a basic thing on psychology. In any case the article was great and the use of something mundane as the lost keys makes it seems personal. Not to you but to the reader.

Curious enough I was writing an article for my own blog referring to this, or something like this. We see other people because they are around, so we see them as people (they make mistakes and those are attributed to them as people). On the other hand we can't see us directly, because we are like a pole, who can only see "reasons" which wander around us.

At some point we can picture ourselves, so we can't sometimes (or never, or always) blame ourselves erratically (because it's how we see us, not how we are).

Also we know that "field" of reasons wandering around us (logical explanations, causes and effects) is present on other people. But as the field is around them we only see them, the pole. The atmosphere just gives them a "human" essence.

PS. What are Pia's comments? I don't understand any of that, and can't see any links to think about spam comments. It surely doesn't add anything to the conversation, but if they're so meaningless what's the problem with getting rid of them?

So what does all this mean for those of us who usually blame ourselves for our own mistakes? (I can't find my keys because I stupidly and absentmindedly put them down in the wrong place.) I can beat myself up for quite a while with this sort of thing.

The field of global warming could have really used this information early on. Knowing that people would misplace their attributions (a week of heat means it's real, snow means it's not) could have aided in a better education approach.
