Today our 12 year old boxer took her life. She attempted several times to jump into the pond. Her entire body was later found in the 2 inch water with her jaw locked onto the wire at the bottom. I'm convinced it was to prevent herself from being able to breath. So sad :-(

I've read in many places that:
* dolphins have the ability to take control of their breathing, much like humans, but moreso, and
* they can voluntarily chose not to breathe, essentially suffocating themselves to death.
Unfortunately I've never come across research that supports this, or shows how anyone knows that dolphins can control their breathing.
Another folk myth? Something animal rights campaigners want to believe about dolphins getting depressed and suicidal in captivity?

There`s an old folk tradition that scorpions are so aggressive that they`ll even sting themselves. That`s never actually been observed in nature, though.
