You are also forgetting personal free time. In the past we had no free time, and we believed in the devil. Today the average person has much more free time, all kinds of new micro-technology that might be considered magic (how does the cell phone work?) our rational mind has to know and understand how the tech is made, otherwise it is magic. With diminishing religion/religious woreship, we no longer have the devil to blame stuff on, so we then have mental illness.
The “devil” didn’t go away.
